Steve Conlon | Chairperson 09/10

Originally from Sligo. Steve is currently studying for a BA in Communication Studies.  He is in second year.

Steven is the former Creative Director of Core Concepts, a graphic design and marketing company. He also was a Policy Officer of the Union of Students in Ireland, and a Project Coordinator in the National Educational Welfare Board.

Steven on occasion works in the News Room of the Irish Times.

He has previously written for:

  • The Sligo Weekender
  • Magill Magazine
  • Irish Times
  • Sunday Independent
  • The College View (DCU)

Steven is currently the Director of News for DCUfm,  and presents two shows, Studio 1, a discussion based current affairs show and Simply Classic, a classical music show. He is also the former News Features Editor of the College View.

Vicky Kavanagh | Events

Vicky is in Year Two of the B.A in Journalism at DCU. She currently is Deputy Arts Editor for the College View and is an Access Scholarship student.

She writes frequently for the College View and has also had work published in several anthologies. She acts as an Alumni Student-Representative and has given speeches at their events.

Conor Donohoe | 1st year Rep

Conor lives in Artane, Dublin and is a first year BA in Journalism student. He has written for the DCU College View on a number of occassions since arriving at the college, and has work experience in the Irish Times. Conor is also currently part of the DCUfm sports team, and has written several reviews for a music website.

Away from journalism, Conor is involved in several musical ensembles and projects.

Niall Farrell | Ordinary Member

Niall Farrell is an ordinary member on the committee with responsibility for representing The College View. Niall is the Secretary General of the DCU Model United Nations Society and has served on several other society committees in his time in DCU. Niall is the Sports Editor for The College View and writes extensively on sport for extratime.ie and backpagefootball.com.

Niall has written in the past for the Drogheda Independent, the Irish Daily Mail, the Tallaght Echo, The Argus (Dundalk), the Mid-Louth Independent and the Fingal Independent.

Niall also has worked as assistant producer for a current affairs show on DCUfm and presented his own music show “Album Avenue” on DCUfm as well as working for West Dublin Access Radio and featuring in the past on RTE Radio One, 2fm, City Channel and TV3.

Dr. Mark O’Brien | Society President

Mark O’Brien is a Ph.D. graduate of the National University of Ireland. He is the author of De Valera, Fianna Fail and the Irish Press: The Truth in the News (2001) and co-editor of Political Censorship and the Democratic State: The Irish Broadcasting Ban (2005). He was historical advisor to the RTÉ Hidden History documentary Family Fortune: De Valera’s Irish Press (2004).

Teaching and research interests include modern Irish history and politics, the sociology of crime and conflict and media history. Mark has most recently authored a book on the history of The Irish Times.
