Mark Little to accept honourary membership.

Broadcaster and author Mark Little will formally accept honourary membership of the Society on Monday 8th March.

Mr. Little began is career in journalism working for The Sunday Business Post. He was then hired as a TV reporter for RTÉ News and Current Affairs in 1991. By 1995 he was RTÉ’s first Washington Correspondent.

DCU journalism student wins major award.

A third year DCU journalism student, Stephen Mangan, has won the Hugh Cudlipp award for promising young journalists – beating out students from across Britain and Ireland.
Mangan, who says he was “delighted to have won the award,” was awarded a £1,000 prize at the annual Hugh Cudlipp Lecture in the London College of Communication last month. Previously Mangan had also won the Irish Student Media award (Smedia) for Sports Writer of the Year for his work in the College View.

BBC tells news staff to embrace social media.

ource of information by Peter Horrocks, the new director of BBC Global News who took over last week. He said it was important for editorial staff to make better use of social media and become more collaborative in producing stories.

“This isn’t just a kind of fad from someone who’s an enthusiast of technology. I’m afraid you’re not doing your job if you can’t do those things. It’s not discretionary”, he is quoted as saying in the BBC in-house weekly Ariel.

Horrocks said that technology was changing journalism, adding that it was important for the BBC to leave a programme-based mindset behind and adapt to new technologies.

Journalists launch campaign to challenge BNP in run-up to election.

Campaigning journalists and media workers are to launch EXPOSE, a campaign aimed at “revealing the undemocratic and racist nature” of the British National Party.

The new campaign will tackle the BNP’s “attempts to construct a respectable public image” and support media workers who refuse to work on uncritical programmes or material, the group announced on Tuesday.

Desmond action over ‘Magill’ article settled.

A libel action by businessman Dermot Desmond over an article published in Magill magazine 12 years ago was settled at the High Court yesterday.

Mr Desmond had sued Coliemore Publications Ltd, Vincent Browne, then editor of Magill, and journalist Ursula Halligan over a 1998 article.

Under yesterday’s settlement, an apology was read which was also told Mr Browne is to make a contribution to a charity nominated by Mr Desmond.
